The most popular stone type used in countertop applications, what we call granite may include stone materials that are not true geological granites by definition (for example, anorthosite, diabase, diorite, gabbro, gneiss). These stones, being the hardest of the common countertop options, offer superior resistance to abrasion, scratches, heat, and discoloration from exposure to most chemicals commonly found in a home.

Calcium carbonate-based marble is a stone that offers the aesthetic appeal of distinct veining and bold colors–as can be seen in the finest architectural settings. Because it is relatively softer than granite, marble is less desirable for routine kitchen usage because it can be scratched by utensil use, abraded by harsh cleaning products, or permanently etched by exposure to acidic solutions such as lemon juice, tomatoes, or vinegar. Application of a sealer will reduce, but not eliminate, marble's vulnerability to these hazards. Marble is best used in applications that highlight its qualities of richness and elegance.

First introduced 20 years ago, Silestone is an engineered quartz surfacing product, made from approximately 95% natural quartz and 5% polymer resins. Its color palette includes more than 65 hues, plus depth options of one-, three-, and five-dimensions that provide increasingly higher indexes of light refraction. Countertops are custom made and are more scratch resistant, as well as less porous, than natural quartz surfaces. Silestone has the unique ability to embed Microban anti-microbial protection as part of the manufacturing process.

Surfaces made of tile consist of units set in beds of mortar or mastic with the joints between them filled with grout, plastic sealant, epoxy, or resin. An endless variety of patterns may be achieved using geometric combinations of shapes, sizes, and colors. Stone tile (granite or marble) use is subject to similar constraint as the stone slab from which it is made. Ceramic tile is a fired, clay-based product whose more durable varieties include quarry, porcelain, and terra cotta.

Travertine is a type of limestone that has been used as a building and flooring material throughout history, from the ancient Roman Colosseum to the more recent Getty Center in Los Angeles. It forms near hot, mineral-rich springs, causing gas bubbles to become trapped and create pitted surfaces on the stone. These pitted surfaces are filled with an epoxy or dust resin, giving the travertine a more refined, finished look.

Timber from hardwoods, spruce or hard pine are manufactured in two primary forms: plank and parquet. Wood flooring may come unfinished, to be sanded, then finished on site once installed. Or the wood may be factory pre-finished with a polyurethane coating that has added aluminum oxide, titanium dioxide or other oxides to increase the wear a hardwood floor can handle.

Fitted carpet, also known as wall-to-wall carpet, is intended to cover a floor entirely and permanently. Its advantage is to offer comfort and some soundproofing. However, carpet can be hard to clean, and can trap dirt and mites, sometimes causing allergic reactions.
